The cooler temperatures this time of year pose some hazards to our dogs. Here are some risks to watch out for to keep our dogs safe in the cooler months.
Acorns
These are toxic for our dogs and can cause liver and kidney damage. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy and abdominal pain.
The toxic ingredient is not yet known but it is thought to be tannic acid. Acorns can also cause internal blockages.
Mushrooms and toadstools
Mushrooms are very toxic to dogs and depending on the type of mushroom ingested the smallest amount can be fatal.
There are many different types of mushrooms that are toxic to our dogs but the most dangerous type is the Amanita which can cause severe gastrointestinal symptoms and liver and kidney failure.
Autumn plants
Some plants that can be found during fall can be very poisonous to our dogs such as:
Chrysanthemum: (Chrysanthemum) All parts of the plant are toxic. Causes vomiting and diarrhea
Amaryllis: (Hippeastrum spp) All parts are toxic to cats and dogs, especially the bulbs. Causes upset stomach, lethargy, coma and shock.
Hydrangea: Contains cyanide and is also present in spring and summer. These are toxic to both dogs and cats.
Oleander: (Nerium oleander) All parts of the plant are toxic. Affects the heart, produces severe digestive upset, extremely poisonous. Can be fatal.
Ragwort: (Senecio jacobaea) All parts of this plant are poisonous. Causes kidney failure and liver damage which is irreversible. Small amounts can be fatal. Poisonous to dogs and cats.

Grapes and raisins
The toxic ingredient is currently unknown but these are highly toxic to our dogs which can cause kidney failure.
Cold weather and shorter days
During the colder and wetter months some dogs may not get as much exercise as they would in the summer. It is a good idea to keep track of their weight and their food intake because you may have to adjust their food accordingly so they do not put on too much weight.
Now that the days are getting shorter you may end up walking your furry friend when it is dark so to keep both of you safe and seen you could consider a fluorescent coat/collar. Attaching a flashing light to your dog’s collar is also a good idea so that they are easier to see.
Colder temperatures can exacerbate some health problems such as arthritis so speak to your veterinarian if you notice your pet showing signs of discomfort, limping or reluctant to exercise. You could also add joint supplements to your dogs diet to help with aches, pains and inflammation such as:
Green lipped muscle
turmeric
kelp
Glucosamine
Omega 3
Manganese
Some dogs may feel the cold more than others such as toy breeds and those with short hair so you can also consider getting a sweater or jacket for them to keep nice and warm. Also keep a particular eye on higher risk dogs such as geriatric, puppies or dogs with compromised immune system.

These are some hazards that you can look out for to keep your dog safe during fall so that the both of you can enjoy autumn together.
If you have any concerns at all that your dog may have ate something poisonous then always seek veterinary attention as soon as possible. It is always better to be safe than sorry.
